Flights Restart on Krakow-Rome Route!

Having suspended the Krakow-Rome flights because of limiting its operations to charters, Centralwings has abandoned its passengers (tourists and church officials visiting Vatican) on route with 75-percent occupancy. The passengers had to fly to Rome via Munich or Warsaw. Jan Pamula, the CEO of the Krakow airport, had numerous times asked LOT to come back to the route because of its prestige and high occupancy level.

“After initial negotiations with LOT and representatives of the Krakow airport we have decided to relaunch the route in the charter-mix formula. We still need to discuss the contract conditions and the sales details. We will fly on this route since spring, twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays”, Tomasz Szymczak, Centralwings CEO said

Improved Disabled Facilities in Auschwitz

The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum is set to become more accessible to the visually and aurally challenged. Guides will be published in two new versions – Braille and extra-large lettering.

The museum will provide these new services free of charge under the sponsorship of Krakow’s Center and School for the Blind and Deaf.

Barbara Plant, the director of the school stated, “Previous opportunities were very limiting […] up until now, we could only tell visually impaired people about Auschwitz.”

A press liason for Auschwitz, Pawel Sawicki, said that, “It was most difficult to create a Braille map of Auschwitz that would be understandable for the visually-impaired. However, the teachers from the school in Krakow were instrumental in helping us.”

One of the specialists from the school, Leszek Ogorek, highlighted the fact that “it was most important to convey the magnitude of this place and not necessarily make the most exact map […] The map of Auschwitz is quite accurate and legible. However, due to the enormous size of Birkenau, it was impossible to make such a map perfectly accurate. I was more focused on conveying the size, scope and span of the place.”

So far, the maps have been received very positively by the visually-impaired community. Przemek Kielar, a blind second-year student at the Vocational School for Piano Tuners, claims that “the maps are very well done and there is tons of information on them […] It’s possible to learn a lot from them, and blind people who have yet to go to Auschwitz will now be able to get a clear picture of the history and look of the concentration camp. Now, if someone is to go there, the experience of their visit will have a lot deeper meaning.”

The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum is one of the first in Poland to publish such a guide for the disabled. The museum opened in 1957. They publish catalogues, maps and guides in over 20 languages.

UEFA Cup 2012 in Ukraine in Doubt

KIEV, July 3 (Reuters) - Ukraine has three months to prove its preparations for hosting the 2012 European championship with Poland are on track, UEFA president Michel Platini said on Thursday, adding he felt confident of their success.

Platini said last weekend that Poland and Ukraine risked losing the right to host the tournament if stadiums in their capitals were not ready. He said UEFA would make a decision on that at a meeting in Bordeaux in late September.

Arriving in Ukraine after a visit to Poland, Platini met with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and President Viktor Yushchenko -- whose personal backing for the joint bid to host Euro 2012 helped convince UEFA officials.

"You have three months to work together to give Poland and Ukraine a way of hosting a fantastic Euro," Platini said at a meeting with Yushchenko. "I am confident. But I need just a little guarantee."

Platini warned Ukraine about slow preparations in January, saying that the next few months were crucial. On Thursday, the had of European soccer's ruling body said those comments were meant to "wake up" Ukraine.

"We had some questions to ask you because not everything was exactly clear concerning many things in Ukraine -- the stadiums, the airports, etc," he said, addressing Yushchenko.

"You have answered straight away, and madame prime minister has also answered."

Both Yushchenko and Tymoshenko pledged to step up efforts.

"We will do everything, even the impossible, so that there will be a fantastic celebration for the entire world," Tymoshenko said at her meeting with Platini
